In an interview with Urology Times, Adam B. Murphy, MD, MSCI, Distinguished Professor of Health Equity Research in Urology at Northwestern Medicine, discussed his team’s approach to creating a prostate biopsy risk calculator for Black men. The idea for the study came to light when Dr. Murphy noticed existing risk calculators often pushed Black patients towards biopsy without accurately identifying low-risk individuals. The study’s goal was to create a risk calculator tailored to Black men and validate its effectiveness in predicting outcomes. The findings showed that the new risk calculator performed better than established calculators, particularly in identifying low-risk individuals and helping them avoid unnecessary biopsies.
