February 2023 INSIDE THE OR: HEART TRANSPLANTEpisode SummaryAs part of the Northwestern Medicine Inside the OR video series, join cardiac surgeons Duc Thinh Pham, MD, associate professor of Cardiac Surgery and surgical director of Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support at Northwestern Medicine, and Benjamin S. Bryner, MD, assistant professor of Cardiac Surgery and associate director of Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support at Northwestern Medicine, as they perform a heart transplant using the “Heart in a Box” TransMedics technology. The TransMedics Organ Care System (OCS™) Heart resuscitates a stopped heart and keeps it pumping outside of the body until it can be transplanted. Estimates suggest that this approach could increase the number of available donor hearts for transplant by up to 30% in the United States.
