April 2022 NORTHWESTERN MEDICINE RECEIVES NIH GRANTS TO STUDY RHEUMATIC DISEASE USING GENOMIC APPROACHESMacrophages in the joint synovium are key to maintaining homeostasis, but their dysregulation in aging contributes to the development of arthritis. Deborah Winter, PhD, recently received a grant from the NIH to study how the aging environment alters synovial macrophages on the molecular level using genomic approaches. In this video, Dr. Winter explains this work and another project funded by the NIH, which is assessing the role of synovial macrophage subpopulations in rheumatoid arthritis. With these novel interdisciplinary approaches, these studies will be critical to the development of targeted therapeutic interventions for rheumatic disease.
