SUCCESS AT THE CERVICAL SPINE RESEARCH SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING

Featuring: Erik Gerlach, MD

The Cervical Spine Research Society (CSRS) 50th Annual Meeting and 27th Instructional Course, November 16-19, 2022, gathered leading orthopaedic and neurosurgical physicians, residents and fellows in an international forum. The meeting promoted high-quality research, discussion and exchange of ideas for the diagnosis and treatment of cervical spine injury and disease.

Northwestern Medicine residents had many successes at the CSRS Annual Meeting:
  • Nicholas Arpey, MD, gave a podium presentation, supported by our current CSRS grant, on quantitative patient expectations before cervical spine surgery.
  • Erik Gerlach, MD, won the 2022 resident research grant on patient activation before cervical spine surgery. Working to get CSRS research funding is a highly rigorous and competitive process. CSRS receives many high-quality proposals each year, and every proposal is thoroughly vetted and reviewed by the Research Committee. This year, 39 grant applications were received and a total of eight were funded across four grant categories totaling more than $200,000.
  • Peter Swiatek, MD, and Erik Gerlach, MD, received CSRS resident scholar awards, a competitive award process.

In addition, three medical students from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine — Samuel G. Reyes, Rushmin Khazanchi, and Anitesh Bajaj — had podium presentations about machine-learning work with Srikanth N. Divi, MD:
  • “Low Preoperative Serum Calcium Levels Predict Perioperative Medical Complications and Healthcare Utilization in Patients Undergoing ACDF”
  • “Unemployment and Education Level Are Important Drivers of 90-day Readmission Rates after PCDF”
