August 2022 NORTHWESTERN MEDICINE WELCOMES DAMINI JAWAHEER, PHD, EXPERT IN RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS PREGNANCYNorthwestern Medicine is pleased to welcome Damini Jawaheer, PhD, as a research associate professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology. An expert in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and pregnancy, Dr. Jawaheer uses a novel epidemiology and genomics approach to elucidate the long-known but relatively unexplored natural improvement of RA during pregnancy.
Dr. Jawaheer led an international multidisciplinary research team to establish the first prospective RA pregnancy cohort for gene expression and epigenetic studies. This ongoing NIH-funded work is significant for identifying novel therapeutic targets for safer RA treatment and elucidating pregnancy-induced biological changes among healthy women. The findings should also provide insight into how the maternal-fetal environment during RA pregnancy may adversely impact outcomes. In this faculty profile video, Dr. Jawaheer shares details about her research and the exciting future directions she is pursuing. |
