February 2024 MARIANJOY ACQUIRES ADVANCED BALANCETUTOR TECHNOLOGYNorthwestern Medicine Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital has recently acquired a new piece of advanced technology, the Meditouch BalanceTutor™. This treadmill is mounted on a force plate platform that can move forward, backward, and in medial/lateral directions to simulate a slip or trip in all phases of walking.
Patients use the BalanceTutor with a harness to ensure their safety. It replicates changes in balance, allowing patients to practice with customized postural control in the specific gait phase that the therapist chooses. The BalanceTutor has a portable monitor and offers a variety of virtual reality (VR) scenes that therapists can use to help patients with balance and gait training. The virtual backdrops create a more realistic, semi-immersive environment that mimics real-world situations. The BalanceTutor can treat a wide range of patients including fall prevention for older adults, as well as patients with neurological, orthopaedic and vestibular diagnoses. By acquiring the BalanceTutor, Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital will be the first facility in Chicagoland to offer this form of training. Nationally, Marianjoy is the 10th facility to offer it to outpatients and the second to offer it to inpatients. The BalanceTutor is expected to be in use beginning spring of 2024. Marianjoy is a leader in offering a wide range of advanced technology — including VR, robotics and biofeedback — that improves outcomes for patients in recovering from illness or injury. We fully integrate these devices into patient treatment plans, allowing clinicians to set the standard for delivering better rehabilitation care. |
