March 2024 A TRIBUTE TO DEDICATION: ANITA KOU, MD, HONORED WITH THE JAMES SMITTKAMP AWARDFeaturing: Anita Kou, MD
The United Spinal Association Illinois Chapter has announced the recipient of its prestigious James Smittkamp Award: Anita Kou, MD, a Northwestern Medicine physiatrist who focuses on spinal cord injury medicine. Dr. Kou’s exceptional service and dedication to the spinal cord injury community have made a significant impact on patients and the field. The award honors James Smittkamp, a World War II veteran who was paralyzed during the war. Each year, the association presents it to someone who has made a significant contribution to the association or to improving the lives of people with spinal cord injuries. The association’s executive director recommended Dr. Kou for the award due to her dedicated service to the organization and her work serving those with spinal cord injuries. She has illuminated the path for many through her educational talks, her invaluable presence on the medical advisory board, and her participation in social events that have given patients with spinal cord injuries a chance to engage in community activities. The Board of Directors voted to present Dr. Kou with the award. The announcement was made at the annual benefit banquet, “Dinner with Friends,” which took place on February 17, 2024. The event was well-attended, with several staff members, former inpatients, current Marianjoy clinic patients, and their families in attendance. Dr. Kou’s achievement reminds us of the power of service and the difference one individual can make. Northwestern Medicine congratulates Dr. Kou on this well-deserved recognition and looks forward to her continued contributions supporting people with spinal cord injuries. |
