Northwestern Medicine Pulmonary, Critical Care and Thoracic Surgery is a national leader in research and clinical care of lung diseases and critical illnesses. Our pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, respiratory physicians and researchers are dedicated to making breakthrough discoveries and bringing innovative medical treatments to the bedside. 

The team is committed to improving patient outcomes through leading-edge clinical and translational research. In recent years, the team has expanded to address critical areas of need including a lung transplantation program and a post-COVID-19 lung rescue clinic. We’re also proud to have pioneered double-lung transplantation for COVID-19 patients in the U.S.

Updates from Northwestern Medicine PULMONARY

In 2024, Northwestern Medicine Canning Thoracic Institute’s Lung Transplant Program finished the year by performing 148 lung transplants, their highest volume for a single year since the program began 10 years ago. For the first time, Canning Thoracic Institute became the highest volume lung transplant center in the U.S. and achieved the shortest wait time for a lung transplant, with a median wait time of four days.​

Join leaders in pulmonology and thoracic surgery at the 2nd Annual Canning Thoracic Institute Pleural Course. The pleural course is a half day of lectures discussing the hot topics in management of pleural disease followed by hands-on experience in the simulation center learning from experts how to perform thoracentesis, chest tube placement, tunneled pleural catheter placement, and medical thoracoscopy.
