June 2024 Northwestern Medicine NeurosurgeryINCOMING AND OUTGOING RESIDENTS AND FELLOWSMeet our incoming residentsEdgar Petrosyan, MD
Dr. Petrosyan completed his medical school training at the First Moscow State Medical University in Russia and then emigrated to the United States to pursue further neurosurgical research and clinical training. He began his research career in 2020 at Rush University, studying movement disorders and deep brain stimulation. In 2021, he joined the lab of Maciej Lesniak, MD, to study novel therapeutics for primary and metastatic brain tumors. Through this experience, he has become an integral member of the Northwestern Neurosurgery team, and his work has led to four first-author publications and many more as a contributing author. Dr. Petrosyan received the Best Presentation Award from the Higher School of Economics at the National Research University in Moscow, Russia, for his talk on “Medication Logistics of Internet-Based Pharmacy,” and he was awarded Kaplan Medical Honor Society membership for excellence in the study of medicine through exceptional achievement on the USMLE Step 1. Dr. Petrosyan aspires to be a physician-scientist who embodies discipline, adaptability, and attention to detail in the practice of neurosurgery. He is an accomplished violinist, played in a string orchestra for eight years. Dr. Petrosyan intends to bring the expanded perspective on life and profound sense of kindness and compassion that he discovered in the study of classical music to his role in patient care. He is fluent in Armenian, Russian, and English, with a modest ability to hold his own in basic level French. Sharbel Romanos, MD
Dr. Romanos completed both his undergraduate studies in the biological sciences and medical school at the University of Chicago. During that time, he spent six years conducting research with Issam Awad, MD, studying biomarkers and potential novel technologies for cerebral cavernous malformations and other hemorrhagic diseases. Dr. Romanos has contributed to nearly two dozen publications with one first author investigation in translational stroke research. He is the recipient of the Calvin Fentress Research Fellowship Award, in addition to several others. Having spent much of his childhood overseas in France and China, Dr. Romanos is interested in understanding how neurosurgery operates globally and in finding ways to translate scientific discoveries to the American health system and beyond. Dr. Romanos is also a recording artist on Spotify in competitive a cappella singing. He is fluent in Arabic, French and English. Daniel Zhang, MD
Dr. Zhang completed his bachelor’s degree in biophysics, biochemistry, and molecular biology at Whitman College and medical school at Rush Medical College of Rush University Medical Center. Since 2018, Dr. Zhang has investigated applications of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound to disrupt the blood-brain barrier both for drug delivery and diagnostics in the lab of Adam Sonabend, MD, resulting in publication of 15 articles, including four first author publications. Dr. Zhang’s work with Dr. Sonabend directly led to a NIH-funded R01 grant and FDA approval for a phase I/II clinical trial. He has received the Rush Medical College Summer Research Fellowship, among other honors. When not in the clinical or research spaces, Dr. Zhang ponders the meaning of life while on endurance runs and dabbles in furnace repair.
