Northwestern Medicine and Lou and Jean Malnati Brain Tumor Institute of Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University were prominently featured at the recent Society for Neuro-oncology (SNO) conference in Vancouver, Canada. The conference showcased Northwestern Medicine’s commitment to pioneering research and patient care for central nervous system (CNS) tumors. Recognitions and Honors Priya Kumthekar, MD, associate Professor of Neuro-oncology and of Hematology and Oncology at Northwestern Medicine, was honored with the 2023 Women in Neuro-Oncology Mid-Career Exemplary Physician Award. This international award recognizes a female physician’s early success and promise for significant accomplishments in neuro-oncology. Sub-meetings The conference's sub-meetings provided a comprehensive overview of neuro-oncology, highlighting rapid advances in the field. Presentations from Northwestern Medicine scientists focused on educating both seasoned neuro-oncology professionals and those transitioning into this sphere. At the 8th Annual SNO Review Course, Rimas Lukas, MD, associate professor of Neuro-oncology and of Hospital Neurology at Northwestern Medicine, presented on the full spectrum of CNS tumors. In addition, Dr. Kumthekar discussed glioblastoma and the groundbreaking work Northwestern Medicine is undertaking in this field. Education Day Insights Dr. Lukas, as co-chair, presented on inherited cancers leading to CNS tumors — an area where Northwestern Medicine leads both clinically and in research. Presentations from Dr. Lukas and Craig Horbinski, MD, professor of Experimental Pathology, of Neurological Surgery and of Neuropathology at Northwestern Medicine, covered Von Hippel Lindau disease (VHL), neurofibromatosis and tuberous sclerosis. Scientific Advances SNO's scientific pinnacle included presentations from Northwestern Medicine and Duke University. Research from Adam Sonabend, MD, associate professor of Neuro-oncology at Northwestern Medicine, was presented, highlighting successful drug penetration of the blood-brain barrier — a significant milestone in neuro-oncology.
