IDENTIFYING NOVEL GENETIC CAUSES OF MOVEMENT DISORDERS

Niccolo E. Mencacci, MD, PhD, instructor of Neurology in the Division of Movement Disorders at Northwestern Medicine, talks about how he and his team in the Northwestern Medicine Neurogenetics Program, the only one of its kind in Illinois, are investigating the genetic and environmental factors that contribute to movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and how this work is paving the way for personalized neurology.
 
“Genetic studies in patients with Parkinson’s and other movement disorders represent the first step for precision medicine,” says Dr. Mencacci. “Because by recognizing the genetic basis of each patient with movement disorders that we treat, we can identify whether there are specific molecular targets that are driving the disease of these patients.”
