November 2020 ADDRESSING CONFLICTS SURROUNDING OLDER ADULT SOCIAL NEED THROUGH NEGOTIATION TRAININGFeaturing: Lee Lindquist, MD, MPH, MBA
Episode SummaryLee Lindquist, MD, MPH, MBA, chief of Geriatrics, and her team have been awarded more than $3.9 million from the National Institutes of Health to adapt and test the use of negotiation and dispute resolutions (NDR) training programs to optimize caregiver communication for older adults. The team is collaborating with the Kellogg School of Management to teach the training to caregivers and children of older adults to help them better negotiate and advocate for their loved ones with their care teams. This research stems from a study, published in Geriatrics, which trained hospitalists to address conflicts surrounding social needs in older adults. Initial results from the study revealed that the training impacted hospitalists’ clinical practice and they were able to effectively negotiate with patients and their families by practicing the skills learned in the NDR workshop.
