April 2024 FROM TROY, MICHIGAN, TO CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, 2 FRIENDS TRADE IN CROSS-COUNTRY JERSEYS FOR WHITE LAB COATSFeaturing: Ayush Batra, MD, Stephen VanHaerents, MD
While growing up together in a suburb just outside Detroit, Michigan, Ayush Batra, MD, and Stephen VanHaerents, MD, never dreamed they’d both be practicing medicine in the field — and at the same hospital. While attending Troy Athens High School in Troy, Michigan, the two were on the cross-country team together and hung out with the same group of friends. After finishing medical school, residency and fellowships, the two wound up on the same team once again — working as neurologists at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Dr. Batra’s specialty is neuro-critical care, and he treats patients with brain injuries in the Neuro-Spine ICU. Dr. VanHaerents’ specialty is treating patients with epilepsy. In 2023, they worked together on a very rare case involving a 20-year-old college athlete with febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES). From running cross-country together to treating neurology patients, the friendship and team history between Dr. Batra and Dr. VanHaerents helps make them better physicians. |
