The health and well-being of patients is at the core of our department’s mission. We deliver on our mission by providing outstanding, evidence-based clinical care and by developing new treatments and techniques through innovative neuroscience research and medical breakthroughs. Our program includes the Neuroradiology Department, which collaborates with the Northwestern Medicine Department of Radiology to interpret CT and MRI exams of the brain, head, neck and spine. Our Neuropathology Department specializes in diagnosing diseases of the nervous system, including degenerative diseases, tumors, infections, malformations and neuromuscular disorders. In May 2020, Northwestern Medicine physicians established one of the first Comprehensive COVID-19 Centers in the U.S. to treat patients suffering from lingering impacts of the virus. More than three years later, the need for long COVID-19 care still remains. To date, Northwestern Medicine has treated nearly 4,000 patients from 44 states, and our team of 42 clinicians continues to see approximately 100 patients each month. Here, Igor J. Koralnik, MD, chief of Neuroinfectious Diseases and Global Neurology and co-director of Northwestern Medicine Comprehensive COVID-19 Center, shares what the team has learned.

Regenerative nanomedicine is being used to develop new therapies for devastating conditions such as severe spinal cord injuries. Northwestern's Dr. Samuel Stupp is a pioneer in the field of regenerative nanomedicine and recently published a paper in the journal Science that details how a new injectable therapy uses synthetic nanofibers to reverse severe spinal cord injuries in animals and how this therapy could soon be used in humans. |
