Patient health and well-being is at the core of our department’s mission. We deliver on our mission by providing outstanding evidence-based clinical care and by developing new treatments and techniques through innovative research. Our program includes the Neuroradiology Department, which collaborates with the Northwestern Medicine Department of Radiology to interpret CT and MRI exams of the brain, head, neck and spine. Our Neuropathology Department specializes in diagnosing diseases of the nervous system. We balance our clinical work with training residents and fellows, tomorrow's leaders in medicine. In a major advance for the treatment of the deadly brain cancer glioblastoma, Northwestern Medicine scientists including Adam Sonabend, MD, used ultrasound technology to penetrate the blood-brain barrier and provide a small dose of a chemotherapy and immunotherapy drug cocktail. The study, published in Nature Communications, found that this treatment boosted the immune system’s recognition of the cancer cells and could lead to a new treatment approach.

Regenerative nanomedicine is being used to develop new therapies for devastating conditions such as severe spinal cord injuries. Northwestern's Dr. Samuel Stupp is a pioneer in the field of regenerative nanomedicine and recently published a paper in the journal Science that details how a new injectable therapy uses synthetic nanofibers to reverse severe spinal cord injuries in animals and how this therapy could soon be used in humans. |
