January 2024 RECENT ADVANCES IN INCONTINENCE AND OVERACTIVE BLADDER TREATMENTSVikas Desai, MD, of Northwestern Medicine Urology, discusses recent advances in surgical treatments for urinary issues, including urinary incontinence and overactive bladder. One notable development is Bulkamid, a non-particulate, water-based bulking agent that can be implanted in the office. This minimally invasive procedure has shown promising results, with approximately 80% of patients experiencing improvement over a period of five to seven years.
Another significant advance is sacral neuromodulation, which involves implanting a bladder-controlling, nerve-targeting battery. The recent development of MRI-safe devices with a longer lifespan of 15 to 20 years has made this treatment option more accessible. The procedure can be initiated with a basic evaluation in the office, and, if successful, a more extensive procedure can be performed in the operating room. Watch the full video on Urology Times. |
