The Institute of Medicine and the Rush University Medical Center are proud to honor an outstanding individual with the The Henry P. Russe, MD Citation for Exemplary Compassion in Healthcare Award. Henry P. Russe, MD (February 12, 1928-May 10, 1991) served as Dean of Rush Medical College at Rush University Medical Center and served five terms as President of The Institute of Medicine of Chicago during an extraordinary decade of personal and professional commitment to the advancement of medicine. To recognize his contributions, the Trustees of Rush University Medical Center and The Institute of Medicine of Chicago have established the Henry P. Russe, MD Citation for Exemplary Compassion in Healthcare. This ongoing award demonstrates, as Dr. Russe exemplified, that humanitarianism must characterize the practice of medicine and medical education beyond the science, technology and personal skillfulness essential in caring for the health of our fellow citizens. Melissa A. Simon, MD, MPH, the George H. Gardner, MD, Professor of Clinical Gynecology, professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology/Preventive Medicine and Medical Social Sciences, and founding director of the Center for Health Equity Transformation in the Institute for Public Health and Medicine, has been honored by the trustees of Rush University Medical Center and The Institute of Medicine of Chicago with the 2021 Henry P. Russe, MD, Citation for Exemplary Compassion in Healthcare. This ongoing award demonstrates that humanitarianism must characterize the practice of medicine and medical education beyond the science, technology and personal skillfulness essential in caring for the health of fellow citizens. Dr. Simon, who is also a member of Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, works to promote health equity and eliminate health disparities for communities with limited resources as well as improve access to preventive care and cancer treatment for women with low incomes. Dr. Simon's primary research interests are aimed at promoting health equity and eliminating health disparities among women with limited financial resources and limited healthcare access across the lifespan. Melissa A. Simon, MD, MPH is the George H. Gardner, MD, Professor of Clinical Gynecology, the vice chair for research in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, director of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Institute for Public Health and Medicine (IPHAM), and founding director of the Center for Health Equity Transformation (CHET).
Dr. Simon's primary research interests are aimed at promoting health equity and eliminating health disparities among low income, medically underserved women across the lifespan. Integrating health services research with social epidemiologic models, Dr. Simon's research focuses on interventions (such as patient navigation and community health outreach workers) that aim to reduce and eliminate such disparities.
