HIGHLIGHTS FROM RHEUMNOW LIVE 2024

JAK Inhibition in Spondyloarthritis

In this presentation from RheumNow Live 2024, Eric M. Ruderman, MD, discusses the use of JAK inhibitors to treat spondyloarthritis. Dr. Ruderman highlights the background of JAK inhibitors, explaining that they target multiple cytokine pathways and offer potential benefits such as:
  • Oral administration
  • Fast onset of action
  • Short half-life
  • Affordability
Additionally, he shares data on their effectiveness in psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and axial spondylarthritis. He compares the results of different trials, emphasizing the positive outcomes and limitations of JAK inhibitors.

Nonradiographic Axial Spondyloarthritis

In a second presentation, Dr. Ruderman discusses nonradiographic axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) and its relationship to ankylosing spondylitis (AS). He describes the confusion related to diagnosing non-radiographic axSpA, explaining that it is a diagnosis of exclusion, given to people with axSpA symptoms who lack radiographic evidence of sacroiliitis.
