GASTROENTEROLOGY

NORTHWESTERN MEDICINE BUILDS TEAM OF NATIONAL LEADERS IN HEPATOLOGY

Northwestern Medicine recently welcomed four new hepatologists to its team. With 11 hepatologists on staff, Northwestern Medicine has the largest hepatology team in Illinois and one of the largest in the country. The hepatology team will provide care to patients at 17 satellite locations throughout the Chicagoland suburbs and downstate Illinois, increasing patients’ access to care closer to where they live and work.
 
The recent expansion of the hepatology team included:
 
  • Andres Duarte, MD, is a professor of Medicine in the Divisions of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He received his medical degree from Monterrey Institute of Technology and has been in practice for more than 20 years. He specializes in hepatology and liver transplantation, and he is experienced in all type of liver diseases and post-transplant care.
  • Dempsey L. Hughes, MD, is an assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Dr. Hughes received her medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and completed a fellowship in transplant hepatology at the University of Michigan.
  • Sean W. P. Koppe, MD, is an associate professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Dr. Koppe received his medical degree from the University of Illinois and completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in gastroenterology at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University.
  • Sarang B. Thaker, MD, is an assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Dr. Thaker received his medical degree from the University of Illinois and completed his fellowship with the University of Illinois at Chicago. His clinical interests are in general GI and pre-transplant hepatology.
