A Northwestern Medicine team performed a groundbreaking combined double-lung and liver transplant on a patient with stage 3 lung cancer. The patient was a California physician who sustained irreversible damage to his lungs and liver from cancer treatment. This marks the first known case in the U.S. where a patient with advanced lung cancer successfully received a combined lung-liver transplant.

In a recent study published in Nature Communications, Northwestern Medicine scientists, including neurosurgeon Adam Sonabend, MD, used ultrasound technology to penetrate the blood-brain barrier to deliver a small dose of a chemotherapy and immunotherapy drug cocktail into the brain, a major advance for the treatment of glioblastoma.
