GERIATRICS

MCGAW MEDICAL CENTER'S 2022-2023 FELLOW: HARSIMRAN SINGH, MD

Featuring: Harsimran Singh, MD, June M. McKoy, MD

Harsimran Singh, MD is the 2022 to 2023 fellow in the Geriatrics Fellowship Program at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. In addition to providing excellent clinical care to older adults, Dr. Singh has pursued medical education research under the guidance of Program Director June M. McKoy, MD, and senior scholars from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).  His research is focused on assessing geriatrics workforce needs and the drivers that inform ultimate divergence to academic versus community-based geriatrics practice.

Dr. Singh has tracked former geriatrics trainees who have graduated over the last 10 years and has collected survey and telephonic information related to the factors that influenced their career choices post fellowship. The anticipated value of Dr. Singh's current research is its potential to revitalize discussions around the geriatrics' workforce and the ways in which training programs (and national leadership) might consider shepherding more trainees into geriatrics. A manuscript with his findings is forthcoming.

Of note, Dr. Singh was a selected participant in the coveted Fellows' Leadership Program organized by Northwestern University’s highly regarded Center for Leadership. The leadership program was born out of Northwestern University's commitment to developing and honing physician leadership skills, improving physician wellness and mitigating burnout. Dr. Singh has deemed this one of the highlights and major benefits of his training at Northwestern Medicine. Through this opportunity, he has gained a deeper understanding of how leaders lead, the importance of ethical leadership and the urgent need for purpose-driven leadership in medicine in general and in Geriatrics in particular.

Dr. Singh was also chosen from hundreds of applicants as a Futures Fellow by the American Medical Director's Association (AMDA). AMDA’s Futures Program is a one-year learning experience designed to introduce a career in post-acute and long-term care medicine to residents, fellows and advanced practice providers in geriatrics. Dr. Singh plans to work as a geriatric hospitalist for Kaiser Permanente in California.
