May 2024 CASE STUDY: STAIRCASE LAMELLAR MACULAR HOLEA JAMA Ophthalmology case study by Manjot K. Gill, MD, and others describes the case of a 54-year-old male patient who presented for evaluation of a lamellar macular hole in his left eye. Notably, he had previously undergone surgery for a full-thickness macular hole in his right eye, as well as two kidney transplants, and he had experienced hearing loss since the age of 21.
Upon examination, the patient’s care team observed disc pallor and an abnormal macular reflex with superficial yellow retinal dots. Optical coherence tomography revealed a unique staircase appearance of the macular hole. These findings strongly indicated the presence of Alport syndrome, a genetic disorder characterized by collagen abnormalities in basement membranes. Read more about the diagnosis> |
