July 2023 Northwestern Medicine NeurosurgeryINCOMING AND OUTGOING RESIDENTSMeet our incoming residentsMatthew Hagan, MD
Dr. Hagan completed his undergraduate degree in exercise physiology at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Then, he worked for a year at Tufts Medical Center in the Department of Orthopedics. He subsequently enrolled in the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where he earned his medical degree in May 2023. Dr. Hagan’s research focus is on the impact of socioeconomic factors in the surgical management of spinal cord injury. He spent the past year conducting research with Issam Awad, MD, studying biomarkers and potential therapies for cavernous angiomas. Dr. Hagan hopes become a neurosurgeon, specifically a physician-scientist, to make an impact through clinical excellence, research and advances in patient care. He has several publications and participated in multiple presentations nationwide, including as second author on the abstract awarded the Julius Goodman Resident Award for best socioeconomic abstract based on originality, merit, innovation and scientific process at the 2022 CNS Annual Meeting. Anran “Annie” Li, MD
Dr. Li completed her undergraduate degree in neuroscience at the Wellesley College, graduating with magna cum laude. Before pursuing her medical degree, she worked as a biostatistician with Wendy B. London, PhD, at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, where she designed clinical data registries, developed, programed and maintained complex statistical databases in pediatric leukemia and solid tumors. She then earned her medical degree from University of Michigan Medical School in May 2023. While in medical school, Dr. Li has been engaged in numerous student and volunteer organizations, including the American Medical Association, where she served as vice president for the Medical Student Chapter. She also volunteered for Wolverine Street Medicine where she led training sessions to educate medical students on best practices in the treatment and care of people experiencing homelessness. Dr. Li also coordinated monthly Street-run bootcamps to provide medical and psychological outreach to people experiencing homelessness in Detroit, Michigan. Working with Wajd N. Al-holou, MD, of University of Michigan in the Department of Neurosurgery, her research evaluated the impact of perioperative factors on surgical outcomes in patients biopsied for suspected central nervous system (CNS) tumors and CNS lymphoma. Anastasios Roumeliotis, MD
Dr. Roumeliotis completed his undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering at Northwestern University, graduating summa cum laude. He earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in May 2023. His research experience is based on his interest in biomedical engineering and involves work with Ken Gentry at Shirley Ryan Ability Center, where he designed and helped manufacture a functional prototype system for gait. In addition, Dr. Roumeliotis has worked with the Northwestern Medicine ECMH Student Clinic, where he coordinated and completed a quality improvement project for patients with hypertension. In the Department of Neurosurgery, he has worked and published with Nader Dahdaleh, MD, and Matthew Potts, MD. Dr. Roumeliotis’ contributions have included those in the Orthopedics Department, where he has also worked with Wellington K. Hsu, MD, and Alpesh A. Patel, MD, in orthopedic spine, and reported on results of lumbar fusion with and without interbody fusion for lumbar stenosis. Dr. Roumeliotis has a number of publications, abstracts and poster presentations, and he looks forward to further building his research during residency. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR GRADUATING RESIDENTSCongratulations to all three graduating neurosurgery residents who have been fellowship matched. We're excited for these exceptional physicians as they continue their training across a broad range of specialties.
