6 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT NORTHWESTERN MEDICINE RHEUMATOLOGY

Northwestern Medicine Rheumatology is committed to our mission to advance the understanding, treatment and care of rheumatic diseases. Here are six key things to know about our division.

  1. We offer comprehensive and personalized treatment for even the most challenging and rare rheumatic conditions, including the nation’s first combined psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis clinic, as well as scleroderma and vasculitis programs that are among the largest in the U.S.

  2.  We are supported by a robust scientific research program that receives more than $9 million in annual grant funding to advance rheumatology, giving patients access to leading-edge therapies and groundbreaking clinical trials not widely available. We are one of five Core Centers for Clinical Research (CCCR) (P30) funded by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), and one of few ACGME-accredited fellowship programs continually funded by an NIAMS Training Grant (T32).

  3.  We help develop and revise guidelines and new standards of care to improve survival and quality of life for patients. Anisha Dua, MD, of Northwestern Medicine Rheumatology, recently helped develop several American College of Rheumatology (ACR) guidelines for vasculitides. 

  4.  We are leading diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts in the field of Rheumatology. Northwestern Medicine faculty members are determined to eliminate disparities and improve health equity, leading ACR initiatives in DEI and health equity.

  5.  We advance precision medicine in rheumatology. We are one of few rheumatology programs in the nation with a dedicated ultrasound-imaging clinic, which maintains the state-of-the-art equipment and supports experimental procedures, such as ultrasound-guided synovial biopsies performed for the REASON (Rheumatoid Arthritis Synovial Tissue Network) study led by Northwestern Medicine. Our functional genomics program has generated one of the largest biorepositories on tissue isolates from end organs of patients with rheumatic diseases.

  6.  We are part of Northwestern Medicine, which is anchored by Northwestern Memorial Hospital, ranked the No. 9 hospital in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, 2022 – 2023.
