Multicenter Trial Finds Using Circulatory Death Donors is Safe and Effective for Heart Transplantation
A study published in New England Journal of Medicine confirms that circulatory death donor hearts that are reanimated and perfused with blood outside of the body are as safe and effective to transplant as brain death donor hearts preserved using traditional cold storage. These findings suggest that using hearts donated after circulatory death (DCD) may have the potential to widen the donor pool helping more patients in need of life-saving heart transplants. ACU-Heart Clinical Trial Shows Reduction in Post-op Atrial Fibrillation
Kim L. Feingold, PhD, clinical psychologist at Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, discusses the ACU-Heart clinical trial studying the use of daily acupuncture in the hospital setting after heart valve surgery. Not only did the study find that acupuncture after heart valve surgery reduced pain, nausea, stress and anxiety, it also demonstrated a potential 58% reduction in the incidence of post-operative atrial fibrillation. Aortic Valve Replacement Procedures Show Similar Long-Term Survival Rates
Patients with severe aortic stenosis who underwent a minimally invasive aortic valve replacement procedure demonstrated similar long-term survival rates compared to patients who underwent traditional surgery, according to a recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine. Study Reveals Striking Excess Deaths for Black Americans Over Last 20 Years
From 1999 through 2020, Black Americans experienced more than 1.6 million excess deaths and more than 80 million excess years of life lost compared to white Americans, according to a recent study published in JAMA. Genetic Variants Linked to Increased Risk of Coronary Heart Disease
People genetically predisposed to have high LDL cholesterol are at an increased risk for coronary heart disease even if their cholesterol levels are only modestly elevated, according to a recent study published in Circulation. Increasing Early Cardiovascular Screenings for Dilated Cardiomyopathy
An informational communications tool provided to patients with dilated cardiomyopathy helped increase cardiovascular screenings in their first-degree relatives who have a higher risk of developing the genetic disease, according to findings published in Circulation.
