With a steadfast commitment to exceptional patient care and groundbreaking research, these talented professionals are breaking barriers and inspiring the next generation of urologists.
Meet a Few of the Women Leading the Way in UROLOGY at northwestern medicine
Diana K. Bowen, MD
Diana K. Bowen, MD, is an assistant professor of Urology at Northwestern Medicine and a principal founding member and surgeon in Northwestern Medicine’s multidisciplinary program for Transgender Care and Gender-Affirmation Surgery. Dr. Bowen has a particular interest in reconstructive surgery and the management of complex genitourinary conditions, such as spina bifida and bladder exstrophy. She is actively involved in research, with a focus on clinical and patient-centered outcomes in complex genitourinary surgery. She is dedicated to developing effective transitional care models for patients with chronic urologic conditions, as well as for transgender and nonbinary patients. Additionally, Dr. Bowen is committed to reducing radiation exposure in patients, especially children. To achieve this goal, she is involved in the development of new protocols and the use of such innovative technologies as contrast-enhanced ultrasound. Amy E. Krambeck, MD
Amy E. Krambeck, MD, is the chief of Endourology and Stone Disease in the Department of Urology and the Edmund Andrews Professor of Urology at Northwestern Medicine. Dr. Krambeck is a world-renowned leader in the field of urology, specializing in the surgical and medical treatment of stone disease and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). With an h-index score of 38, she has made significant contributions to the field through her extensive research and publications. Her expertise lies in performing minimally invasive procedures, such as holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) for BPH and percutaneous nephrolithotomy for kidney stones. Dr. Krambeck takes a personalized approach to stone prevention, providing comprehensive metabolic workups and tailored prevention plans to her patients. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Krambeck is actively involved in research on the pathogenesis of stone disease, the treatment of urolithiasis during pregnancy and the economics of BPH surgery. She has authored numerous articles and book chapters, totaling 217, and is a valued member of the American Urological Association Guidelines Committee for the surgical management of stones. Kelly M. Maxwell, MD
Kelly M. Maxwell, MD, is a clinical assistant professor of Urology at Northwestern Medicine. With more than 20 years of experience, she has established herself as a respected leader in her field and is now taking on the prestigious role of chief of staff at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Throughout her career, Dr. Maxwell has demonstrated expertise in the treatment of kidney disease, kidney removal surgery and various other urological conditions. She has a special interest in the medical and surgical management of stone disease, benign prostatic hyperplasia and bladder cancer. |
Jennifer U. Miles-Thomas, MD
As the vice chair of Regional Integration and Innovation and assistant professor of Urology at Northwestern Medicine, Jennifer U. Miles-Thomas, MD, brings a wealth of expertise and experience to her role. Dr. Miles-Thomas obtained her medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and completed her urology residency and fellowships in Female Urology and Endourology at the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute. With a passion for continuous learning, Dr. Miles-Thomas completed a master of business administration degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2024, with an additional certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology and holds board certification in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. Her leadership skills are exemplified by her tenure as the chief executive officer and president of Urology of Virginia from 2020 to 2023, where she successfully managed one of the largest private and academic urology groups in the United States. Dr. Miles-Thomas provides specialized care to her patients in female reconstructive surgery, pelvic prolapse, incontinence, complicated urinary disorders and disorders of the urinary system due to neuro-urologic disease. In addition to her clinical work, she will support Northwestern Medicine’s innovation and community engagement efforts. Recent features:
