IDENTIFYING CLINICAL RESEARCH PRIORITIES IN INTERVENTIONAL PULMONARY

The Interventional Pulmonology Outcomes Group (IPOG) was established to address the significant gap in methodologically sound research within the field, particularly in lung cancer diagnostics and treatment. Current practices often rely on a limited number of methodologically robust studies, which primarily consist of retrospective, single-center analyses.

As part of IPOG’s work, 19 experts from various disciplines met to identify gaps and barriers, and outline future research needs related to lung cancer diagnostics and therapies. The group established both short- and long-term research priorities for advancing the field.

Short-Term Research Priorities
  • Establishing standardized measurements for outcomes in interventional pulmonology trials
  • Creating a structured approach to introduce innovative technologies in clinical settings
  • Focusing on patient-centered outcomes by establishing a patient advisory board and incorporating patient perspectives
  • Encouraging early collaboration with industry during the design phase of clinical trials to enhance relevance and practicality

Long-Term Research Priorities

  • Investigating the advances and uses of bronchoscopic ablation techniques
  • Validating the clinical usefulness of biomarkers and incorporating AI in diagnostics and treatment plans
  • Implementing research training programs for emerging professionals in interventional pulmonology
  • Committing to five prospective, large clinical trials, of which at least one will feature adaptive methodologies
  • Creating a biorepository to support investigators and improve research efforts across the discipline

By addressing these identified priorities, the IPOG aims to elevate the standard of research in interventional pulmonology, ultimately benefiting patient care and outcomes in lung cancer treatment.
