A Northwestern Medicine study published in the Journal of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions provides guidance to prevent, recognize and manage balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) complications in the catheterization lab for the treatment of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). BPA is now the treatment of choice for select patients with CTEPH who are not candidates for pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE) or who have residual pulmonary hypertension after PTE. As techniques have advanced, BPA has become safer and more effective — as long as clinicians prioritize patient selection, meticulous intraprocedural technique and a standardized approach to complication management. With proper preparation and a disciplined program, most complications can be averted or managed without major morbidity or mortality. |
