NORTHWESTERN MEDICINE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 62ND STS ANNUAL MEETING

From January 29 through February 1, experts in cardiothoracic surgery from all over the country joined together at the 62nd Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Annual Meeting. Several physicians from Northwestern Medicine Canning Thoracic Institute attended and presented their research at this leading event in cardiothoracic surgery. Check out some STS 2026 recap videos from our physicians who attended below.
Justin M. Karush, DO, weighs in on the importance of the STS Annual Meeting and the representation from Canning Thoracic Institute. Dr. Karush is chief of Thoracic Surgery at Northwestern Medicine Palos Hospital.
Andrew T. Arndt, MD, discusses past STS Annual Meetings and how he plans to bring the latest in surgical innovations back to Canning Thoracic Institute. Dr. Arndt is a clinical assistant professor of Thoracic Surgery at Northwestern Medicine.
Kalvin C. Lung, MD, ​assistant professor of Thoracic Surgery, was part of a physician panel for a session titled, 'Pro Debate: The Single-Site Solution: Unlocking the Potential Dual-Lumen Cannulas.' There, he shared insights alongside Arora C. Rakesh, MD, Canning Thoracic Institute's director of Critical Care.
Medical student Mark Siringnan presented research on behalf of Dean P. Schraufnagel, MD, assistant professor of Thoracic Surgery. The session was entitled, 'User Experience (UX) Matters: A New Framework for Evaluating Thoracic Surgery Educational Videos.' It introduced a new way to evaluate surgical education tools for clinicians.

STS Public reporting updates

In a recent update of their General Thoracic Surgery Database, STS published data showcasing Canning Thoracic Institute's exceptional risk-adjusted outcomes in thoracic surgery. These results demonstrate top-tier performance in mortality and recovery metrics for primary lung cancer resections compared to national and STS benchmarks.
