November 2024 DOES THE ADDITION OF A TRACTION PAD REDUCE POSTOPERATIVE PUDENDAL NEURALGIA IN HIP ARTHROSCOPY?At the recent ISHA Annual Scientific Meeting, Vehniah Tjong, MD, presented innovative research on reducing pudendal neuralgia after hip arthroscopy.
Her research investigated the potential benefits of using a traction pad to alleviate pressure on the pudendal nerve, which is often subjected to prolonged traction time against a perineal post during surgery. This post-surgery complication may affect over half of patients. The randomized controlled trial led by Dr. Tjong involved 53 patients, divided into two groups:
These preliminary findings suggest that transitioning away from the use of a perineal post towards post-less surgery could significantly reduce the incidence of pudendal neuralgia. This study is the first to examine neurologic outcomes after hip arthroscopy with the concomitant use of a perineal post and a traction pad. Dr. Tjong’s talk was titled “Does the Addition of a Traction Pad Reduce Pudendal Neuralgia after Hip Arthroscopy? Interim Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial.” Vehniah Tjong, MD, at the IHSA Annual Scientific Meeting with Northwestern Medicine colleagues Sanjeev Bhatia, MD and Michael Stover, MD.
