CEMENTLESS TKA RATES RISE WITH MINIMAL IMPACT ON EARLY REVISION

At the recent American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Annual Meeting, Adam I. Edelstein, MD, presented his research on the rising use of cementless fixation in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in the U.S. His study found that cementless TKAs increased from 1.6% in 2012 to 19% in 2024, with the highest adoption in the Northeast and the lowest in the Midwest.

Cementless fixation was more commonly used in younger, male, higher‑BMI and lower‑comorbidity patients, with the south U.S. contributing the largest case volume.

Among Medicare‑linked patients 65 or older, cementless TKA carried a slight but statistically significant increase in one‑year revision risk. However, Dr. Edelstein emphasized the effect was negligible, supporting continued use of cementless fixation with proper patient selection.

These findings reinforce cementless TKA as a viable and increasingly adopted option with minimal compromise in early outcomes.
