10-YEAR TRENDS IN ANTERIOR SHOULDER INSTABILITY SURGERY

Investigators, including Sanjeev Bhatia, MD, analyzed national data from 2010 to 2020, revealing significant shifts in surgical approaches to anterior shoulder instability. Their findings were published in Shoulder & Elbow.

Key Insights
  • Arthroscopic anterior labral repair has declined nearly 10% annually. It remains most common in patients aged 15 to 19.
  • Latarjet procedures increased significantly, especially in males aged 20 to 24, before plateauing. This reflects growing awareness of glenoid bone loss as a key factor in surgical decision-making.
  • Open capsulolabral repair, capsular shift and anterior capsulorrhaphy have steadily declined, replaced by bone augmentation and minimally invasive methods.
Surgeons are increasingly prioritizing bone restoration in instability cases. The Latarjet procedure’s growth highlights its role in managing significant glenoid defects. Emerging techniques like arthroscopic Latarjet and allograft bone block augmentation are expected to shape future practice.
