August 2025 FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: VEHNIAH K. TJONG, MDAdvancing Orthopaedic Sports Medicine With Compassion, Innovation and Leadership
In celebration of Women in Medicine Month, we proudly spotlight Vehniah K. Tjong, MD, a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon whose clinical expertise, academic leadership and commitment to better equity continue to elevate the field of sports medicine.
Dr. Tjong serves as an associate professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Northwestern Medicine. Her clinical interests are focused on orthopaedic sports medicine with a special interest in sports-related muscle and tendon injuries, multi-ligament knee reconstruction, meniscal repair, hip arthroscopy, acute rotator cuff tears and shoulder instability. Her surgical focus includes arthroscopic procedures, cartilage preservation, alignment osteotomies and tendon repair. Dr. Tjong serves on the editorial boards of American Journal of Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy, Video Journal of Sports Medicine, and she was selected to be a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Membership Council. Internationally, she has over 100 peer-reviewed publications, has presented research and has been invited as guest speaker in four continents and continues to be teaching faculty for multiple complex knee surgery courses. Dr. Tjong is a team physician for the United States Soccer Federation Women’s National Team and was in Paris for their 2024 gold medal win. She is also a team physician for Northwestern University Varsity Athletics and has provided medical coverage for several professional sports teams in Chicago. In addition, she is an active Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine faculty mentor, reflecting her commitment to mentoring the next generation of physician leaders. Dr. Tjong earned her medical degree from University of Toronto, Canada, in 2011, completed her residency in orthopaedic surgery there in 2015 and completed her sports fellowship training at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in 2016. Dr. Tjong exemplifies the blend of clinical mastery, human-centered care and visionary leadership. Her work not only restores mobility and performance for elite athletes and everyday patients alike but also advances her field of medicine. |
