TIMOTHY JANETOS, MD, ADVANCING PATIENT-CENTERED OPHTHALMOLOGY RESEARCH

Timothy M. Janetos, MD, brings specialized expertise in complex autoimmune and infectious eye diseases to his roles in patient care, clinical research and physician training. As director of the uveitis fellowship and director of clinical research for the Department of Ophthalmology, he supports continued growth in clinical trials and subspecialty education.

Improving Outcomes in Chronic Retinal Disease
Dr. Janetos’ work centers on improving outcomes for patients with chronic retinal conditions, particularly exudative macular degeneration. While effective therapies exist, barriers to access and long-term adherence often limit their impact.

To address this, he integrates:
  • Implementation of science to identify care gaps
  • Data-driven approaches to pinpoint at-risk patients
  • Scalable interventions designed to prevent avoidable vision loss

In recognition of this work, Dr. Janetos was recently named a NUCATS K12 Scholar, a competitive career development award supporting advanced training in translational and patient-centered research.

Expanding Clinical Trials and Access
As director of Clinical Research, Dr. Janetos is advancing efforts to strengthen infrastructure and broaden patient access to clinical trials. His work focuses on:
  • Streamlining clinical trial workflows
  • Improving patient identification and recruitment
  • Increasing awareness of available studies across subspecialties
  • Expanding participation in multicenter and industry-sponsored trials

These initiatives help connect patients with emerging therapies while accelerating innovation in ophthalmic care.

Mentorship and Training the Next Generation
A committed educator, Dr. Janetos mentors fellows and trainees as the director of the uveitis fellowship, supporting both clinical development and research engagement.

His long-term goal is to establish formal ophthalmology research training pathways to help cultivate the next generation of physician-scientists.
