December 2024 NORTHWESTERN MEDICINE OPHTHALMOLOGISTS NAMED VITREORETINAL SURGERY FOUNDATION RESEARCH AWARD RECIPIENTSManjot K. Gill, MD, along with Northwestern Medicine Ophthalmology resident Halit Winter, MD, have been selected as 2024 Vitreoretinal Surgery Foundation Research Award recipients.
The award recognizes the study titled "Estimation of Chronic Kidney Disease Risk Using Fundus Photography-Based Artificial Intelligence in Hypertensive and/or Diabetic Patients With and Without Impaired Renal Function." Scientists used AI to analyze images of the retina to evaluate risk of kidney disease in patients with high blood and diabetes. The study aimed to construct an AI model to help predict the risk of chronic kidney disease in these patients, helping to identify high-risk individuals and to develop earlier treatment strategies. Chris Bowen, MD, and Jeremy Lavine, MD, PhD, alongside Northwestern Medicine Ophthalmology resident Drew Voigt, MD, PhD, were also selected as award recipients for their study, titled “Spatial RNA Sequencing Identification of Heterogenous Molecular Features and Immune Responses Within Uveal Melanoma Tumors.” |
