September 2024 DAVID J. PALMER, MD, ON CUTTING DRUG WASTE IN CATARACT PROCEDURESChicago Medicine Magazine featured David J. Palmer, MD, in an article on the efforts of ophthalmologists to reduce waste generated from cataract surgeries. Dr. Palmer started a campaign to more efficiently use the drugs required for these procedures, which led to the implementation of a new law in Illinois.
This law allows patients to take home partially used, properly labeled topical medications, reducing medical waste and alleviating drug shortages. His work has set a precedent, inspiring similar legislation in other states. Dr. Palmer’s contributions extend beyond legislation. He is actively involved in EyeSustain, a global group focused on ophthalmological sustainability, and serves on the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Committee on Sustainability. His initiatives have not only reduced waste but also helped both patients and medical facilities save on costs. |
