Communicating difficult news or complicated information to patients is a challenging task breast radiologists often face on a daily basis. Surprisingly, communication skills in breast imaging are often not formally taught in training programs, leaving many radiologists to acquire these skills through on-the-job experience. In an article published in the Journal of Breast Imaging, a group of Northwestern Medicine physicians propose a breast imaging-specific method for delivering bad news, drawing inspiration from approaches used in medical oncology. They provide a conversation guide and discuss how to handle these difficult conversations. They also explore strategies for teaching effective communication to trainees, using their breast imaging fellowship program and recent survey results as examples. Read the article > |
