September 2026 NORTHWESTERN MEDICINE NEUROSURGERY WELCOMES MARK YOUNGBLOOD, MD, PHD, TO THE FACULTYFeaturing: Mark Youngblood, MD, PhD
Mark Youngblood, MD, PhD, has joined Northwestern Medicine as an assistant professor of Neurological Surgery and member of the Northwestern Medicine Lou & Jean Malnati Brain Tumor Institute. He will practice at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Dr. Youngblood joins the faculty following completion of the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University Neurosurgery Residency Program, where he also completed an enfolded fellowship in neurosurgical oncology under James Chandler, MD. Prior to medicine, Dr. Youngblood earned a degree in computer engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and worked as a microprocessor design engineer at Intel. He went on to earn his MD and PhD at Yale University, where he studied the genomic and epigenetic drivers of meningioma. Dr. Youngblood specializes in the surgical treatment of brain and skull base tumors, including gliomas, meningiomas, pituitary neuroendocrine tumors and metastatic brain tumors. As part of the Malnati Brain Tumor Institute, he works closely with a multidisciplinary team of neuro-oncologists, radiation oncologists, neuropathologists and neuroradiologists. His research focuses on understanding how tumor biology and the immune microenvironment influence the growth and progression of brain tumors. Using genomic, epigenomic and spatial profiling approaches, his laboratory studies the mechanisms that drive tumor behavior and resistance to treatment. The goal of this work is to identify new therapeutic strategies, including locally delivered and immune-based therapies, that can be translated into clinical trials for patients with brain tumors. |
