FIFTH ANNUAL NORTHWESTERN MEDICINE COMPREHENSIVE STROKE AND CEREBROVASCULAR CONFERENCE

October 19
8:30 am – 4:30 pm

Oak Brook Hills Resort & Conference Center
3500 Midwest Rd, Oak Brook, IL 60523

Sponsored by Northwestern Medicine and the Northwestern Medicine Comprehensive Stroke Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital

Course Directors: Frances Caprio, MD, Archie Ong, MD, Harish Shownkeen, MD, Dhruvil Pandya, MD

Patient data and referral patterns tell us community practitioners may be unaware of the recent advances in diagnosing, treating and managing patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.

It can be difficult for the busy practitioner to take time away from their practice to learn what is new, including the recent changes in the guidelines on managing acute stroke and preventing secondary stroke. This activity aims to provide practice guideline updates and review recently published clinical trial data.

Program Objectives
After attending this educational activity, participants should be able to:
  • Recognize the role of the emergency department in coordination with paramedics in the field and hyperacute triaging and care of stroke patients.
  • Examine the role of frontline neuroradiology imaging in acute stroke and paradigm in triaging patients for interventions.
  • Discuss the indication and care considerations for administering systemic thrombolytic treatments in acute ischemic stroke.
  • Review current indications for endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke and discuss nuances and challenges in patient selection and management.
  • Review current recommendations for diagnostic work up for stroke and discuss the diagnostic challenges when assessing for stroke etiology.
  • Discuss the role of multidisciplinary teams in the acute intervention, management and care of stroke patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysm.
  • Describe and discuss endovascular and surgical options for revascularization for stroke prevention.
  • Explain the role and timeframe for rehabilitation for motor recovery after stroke.
  • Discuss and review criteria for both surgical and endovascular options for patients
  • Identify causes and management of subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Audience
This course is designed for all healthcare providers managing stroke patients, including those in the emergency department, cardiologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, radiologists, advanced care providers, nurses, nurse practitioners and allied health professionals.
