AI-POWERED PATHOLOGY: ADVANCING THE FIELD THROUGH COLLABORATION

Featuring: Daniel J Brat, MD, PhD

2-minute read

Over the next several years, Northwestern Medicine will be collaborating with PathAI to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to transform pathology diagnostics.

PathAI’s tool AISight® will provide a centralized platform for case reviews and remote collaboration. Together, we aim to establish a broad framework for joint research initiatives, clinical innovation programs and the development of AI-powered diagnostic tools.

Key Components of the Collaboration

  • Deployment of digital pathology platform: Our 95 pathologists will start using AISight to remotely review pathology cases across Northwestern Medicine’s 11 hospitals.
  • Joint research projects in AI-powered pathology: Our pathology scientists will conduct research exploring innovative use cases for AI in digital pathology, such as:
    • Enhancing cancer detection
    • Quantifying biomarkers
    • Discovering novel disease patterns
  • Clinical innovation initiatives: We will pilot AI tools in clinical settings, integrating AI insights into pathology practice to improve diagnostic accuracy, efficiency and patient care.
  • Co-development of diagnostic algorithms: Our pathologists will work to develop and refine next-generation AI tools, leveraging real-world clinical data to create algorithms tailored to unmet medical needs.

The Takeaway

“Integrating this technology into our workflow represents a significant leap forward for our pathology program,” says Daniel J. Brat, MD, PhD, professor of neuropathology and chair of  Pathology, Northwestern Medicine. “This collaboration positions Northwestern Medicine at the cutting edge of innovation in pathology, enabling us to conduct groundbreaking research and ultimately deliver even better diagnostic care to our patients.”
