January 2023 LURIE CANCER CENTER ANNOUNCES NEW LEADERSHIP APPOINTMENTSRobert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center at Northwestern Medicine has named the following individuals to new leadership roles:
New Assistant Directors of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) June McKoy, MD Dr. McKoy is a professor of Geriatrics, Preventive Medicine, and Medical Education at Northwestern Medicine. A recognized expert in geriatric oncology, her research goal is to improve survivorship outcomes for older adults with cancer. She is an associate editor of the Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and represents Lurie Cancer Center on the Older Adult Oncology Guidelines Panel of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). Jonathan Moreira, MD Dr. Moreira is an assistant professor of Hematology and Oncology at Northwestern Medicine. His research interests include:
As assistant directors of DEI, Dr. McKoy and Dr. Moreira will work closely with Associate Director Sarki A. Abdulkadir, MD, PhD, to foster a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment at Lurie Cancer Center. New Assistant Directors of Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) Adam B. Murphy, MD Dr. Murphy is an assistant professor of Urology and Preventive Medicine at Northwestern Medicine. His research is focused on prostate cancer disparities faced by people from minority groups. Dr. Murphy has developed a transdisciplinary research collaborative focused on improving participation of people from minority groups in prostate cancer clinical trials. He was recently awarded a Translational Science Award by the United States Department of Defense to study active surveillance among Black and low-income men to improve survivorship. Marquita Lewis-Thames, PhD Dr. Lewis-Thames, is an assistant professor of Medical Social Sciences at Northwestern Medicine. A National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded investigator and advocate, she is dedicated to engaging people from racial and ethnic minorities, as well as rural residents, to understand barriers to care and identify community-based approaches to improve cancer survivorship. Dr. Lewis-Thames' current focus is on identifying and testing strategies to improve community-to-care coordination for rural cancer survivors. As assistant directors of COE, Dr. Lewis-Thames and Dr. Murphy will work closely with Associate Director Melissa Simon, MD, on Lurie Cancer Center initiatives to identify and address health equity disparities related to cancer across Chicago and beyond. |
