April 2026 DIGITAL TWINS HELP PLAN AND IMPROVE ESOPHAGEAL SURGERIES Featuring: John Pandolfino, MD
Northwestern Medicine is pioneering the use of patient‑specific esophageal digital twins, virtual replicas that simulate biomechanical and physiologic behavior, to enhance surgical planning and predict outcomes for complex swallowing disorders. Led by John Pandolfino, MD, the team uses dimensionally accurate models to evaluate esophageal pressures, motility patterns and procedural variables.
A 400‑participant clinical trial is underway to determine whether simulation‑guided planning improves outcomes in achalasia treatment. As the lead site of this study, this work positions Northwestern Medicine as a national leader in applying computational modeling to foregut surgery. Digital‑twin modeling is also being explored across cardiology, urology and other organ systems, with growing interest in dynamic virtual patients that integrate imaging, physiologic data and AI‑enabled decision support.
