The American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and Foundation (AAO-HNS/F) has selected the third class of inductees into the AAO-HNS Hall of Distinction. Dana M. Thompson, MD, MS, a national thought leader, was among them. Dr. Thompson has demonstrated an impeccable commitment to diversity in medicine and actualizing patient-centric, value-based and equitable care delivery models. As a third-generation African American physician navigating a career in academic medicine, Dr. Thompson’s perspective has shaped her personal mission to educate others about the unintended consequences of bias in healthcare delivery. Her diverse portfolio includes service line and program development, change management and practice optimization through process improvement and design thinking, resulting in innovative care delivery models. Fellowship trained in laryngology and pediatric otolaryngology, Dr. Thompson has 25 years of experience as an internationally recognized airway surgeon and leader in aerodigestive medicine. Her collective research contributions in laryngomalacia have influenced the surgical and medical management of the disease, and she is considered one of the world’s authorities on the topic.
