OTOLARYNGOLOGY

DANA THOMPSON, MD, MS, RECEIVES 2024 HALL OF DISTINCTION INDUCTEE AWARD

Featuring: Dana M. Thompson, MD, MS

The American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and Foundation (AAO-HNS/F) has selected the third class of inductees into the AAO-HNS Hall of Distinction. Dana M. Thompson, MD, MS, a national thought leader, was among them.
Dr. Thompson has demonstrated an impeccable commitment to diversity in medicine and actualizing patient-centric, value-based and equitable care delivery models.

As a third-generation African American physician navigating a career in academic medicine, Dr. Thompson’s perspective has shaped her personal mission to educate others about the unintended consequences of bias in healthcare delivery. Her diverse portfolio includes service line and program development, change management and practice optimization through process improvement and design thinking, resulting in innovative care delivery models.

Fellowship trained in laryngology and pediatric otolaryngology, Dr. Thompson has 25 years of experience as an internationally recognized airway surgeon and leader in aerodigestive medicine. Her collective research contributions in laryngomalacia have influenced the surgical and medical management of the disease, and she is considered one of the world’s authorities on the topic.

Dr. Thompson’s is a member of several academic otolaryngology societies, and her achievements include:
  • Receiving the 2013 Helen F. Krause, MD Trailblazer Award from the AAO-HNS
  • Receiving the 2015 Gabriel Tucker awardee from the ALA for outstanding career contributions to pediatric laryngology
  • Being the 2018 Ogura Lecturer and Guest of Honor for the Triological Society
  • Receiving the prestigious Mosher Award from the Triological Society for excellence in clinical research for her seminal work elucidating the etiology of laryngomalacia
  • Delivering the AAO-HNS 2019 John Conley lecture in Medical Ethics
  • Serving as president of the American Broncho-Esophagological Association, an achievement that also made her the first Black president of a major society in otolaryngology
  • Publishing 100 scientific articles and 20 book chapters
  • Delivering 300 presentations in areas of clinical and scientific research, practice development, physician burnout/wellness, and bias in health care to local, regional, national and international audiences

Dr. Thompson and the other inductees will be honored during a special presentation at the AAO-HNSF 2024 Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO during the opening ceremony, 8 to 9 am (ET), September 28, in Miami Beach, Florida.
