STUDY FINDS CGM DISPARITIES IN FQHCS

A recent study in JAMA Network Open revealed disparities in the prescription of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices among people from racial and ethnic minority groups and uninsured people. The research, led by Amisha Wallia, MD, MS, examined electronic health records from federally qualified health centers (FQHCs).
 
Key findings include:
  • Hispanic, Black or uninsured patients with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes had lower odds of receiving CGM prescriptions compared to white or insured patients.
  • CGM orders were over 10 times more common in managing Type 1 diabetes than Type 2 diabetes.
  • Barriers to CGM use among patients in FQHCs highlight the need for targeted health equity initiatives.
