In honor of Women in Medicine Month, Northwestern Medicine is spotlighting women endocrinologists who have helped shape the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Molecular Medicine in the Department of Medicine. Meet a Few of the Women Leading the Way in Endocrinology
These exceptional women have not only excelled in their fields but have also assumed leadership positions at Northwestern Medicine.
Grazia Aleppo, MD, FACE, FACP

Grazia Aleppo, MD, is a professor of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Molecular Medicine. As the associate chief for Clinical Affairs at Northwestern Medicine, Dr. Aleppo is a driving force behind the integration of insulin pump therapy, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and automated insulin delivery (AID) systems into mainstream clinical practice.
Her work bridges the gap between leading-edge research and real-world use, making her a sought-after voice in national and international forums on diabetes care. She also serves as medical director of the Northwestern Medicine Diabetes Training and Education Program, where she leads initiatives to enhance patient education and clinician training in diabetes management. |
Allison J. Hahr, MD

Allison Hahr, MD, is the director of the Northwestern Medicine Bone Health and Osteoporosis Program and an associate professor of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Molecular Medicine. She also serves as the clinical practice director for Endocrinology.
Her clinical and research interests are in calcium and bone disorders, including osteoporosis, hyperparathyroidism/hypoparathyroidism and vitamin D deficiency. She also cares for patients with a variety of disorders including thyroid conditions, diabetes mellitus, and PCOS, offering comprehensive care that integrates the latest evidence-based practices. |
Emily D. Szmuilowicz, MD, MS

Emily Szmuilowicz, MD, MS, is an associate professor of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Molecular Medicine and the fellowship program director of Endocrinology. Her clinical and research focus is on the management of diabetes in pregnancy, including Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes. Her work addresses the unique challenges of balancing maternal and fetal health, and she is a leading voice in the use of CGM and AID systems in obstetrics care.
Dr. Szmuilowicz also serves as the endocrine director of the multidisciplinary Northwestern Medicine Diabetes in Pregnancy Program and is a highly active member of the Association of Program Directors in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (APDEM), where she has served on multiple committees. |
