KUSH DESAI, MD, LED KEY TRIAL FOR FIRST DEEP VENOUS STENT FOR IVC AND ILIOFEMORAL VEINS

Kush Desai, MD, serves as a global PI in an international trial that helped gain FDA approval for a device indicated for the treatment of deep venous disease in the inferior vena cava (IVC), iliac, and iliofemoral veins.

The stent features an open‑structure, self‑expanding wire‑wound nitinol frame with an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene polymer lattice. This design enables the device to conform to native venous anatomy while maintaining strength and fracture resistance.
  • The trial enrolled 89 patients with extensive thrombotic disease burden, including post‑thrombotic syndrome and multivessel involvement.
  • 12‑month primary patency was 83.4%.
  • There were no reported stent migrations, fractures or device‑related deaths.

​Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute performed the world’s first commercial case with the stent and enrolled patients in the trial. This leadership reflects the institute’s commitment to advancing venous care through participation in clinical trials.
